This immersive 6-day course is designed for healthcare professionals and those with advanced first aid training who want to develop their understanding of human factors in challenging, remote, and expedition settings.
Set in the spectacular High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, this course combines trekking at altitude, medical scenario-based training, and expert-led teaching on the psychological and behavioural aspects that affect decision-making, teamwork, and performance in remote environments.
Participants will live and work in basic mountain refuges and operate at moderate to high altitude, allowing for realistic learning in the kind of conditions encountered on expeditions and wilderness deployments around the world.

Who is it for?
Doctors, paramedics, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
Expedition medics preparing for remote or high-altitude deployments.
Mountain leaders, wilderness medicine practitioners, and advanced first aiders with a clinical or outdoor background.
Fitness And Requirements
Participants should have:
A reasonable level of fitness for trekking up to 6 hours a day in rough, exposed terrain.
Prior clinical experience or advanced first aid training.
Willingness to engage in group learning, reflective practice, and outdoor activity at altitude.

HIGHLIGHTS
Trekking and teaching in the Atlas Mountains with views of Mount Toubkal.
Medical simulations and team-based scenarios at altitude.
Overnight stays in mountain refuges – learning to work with limited resources.
Leadership and navigation exercises in remote terrain.
Expert instruction by clinicians experienced in expedition, pre-hospital, resource-poor, and military medicine.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES
Understand the core principles of human factors in healthcare and how they translate to extreme environments.
Learn how altitude, cold, fatigue, and stress impact clinical judgment, team dynamics, and communication.
Practice medical scenarios in real altitude settings – including trauma, hypothermia, and altitude illness.
Explore leadership, decision-making, team cohesion, and situational awareness.
Use tools such as the Johari Window, Swiss Cheese Model, and Crew Resource Management to analyse performance.

COURSE itinerary

Welcome to Morocco!
Transfer from Marrakech to Imlil, then walk to Aroumd village for lunch. After lunch, students can explore the village and enjoy a cultural experience. Overnight at a guest house. -
Trekking & training in the heart of the Atlas
Walk to Tizi Oussem village via Tizi Mzik Pass (2,500 m), with training along the way. Lunch will be prepared en route by my team. Overnight in Tizi Oussem village (1,850 m). 5 to 6 hours of walking. -
Ascend to Tizi Mzik & explore Tizi Oussem
After breakfast, walk from Tizi Oussem to Azib Tamsoult. Today includes training and a visit to the beautiful waterfall. Overnight at Azib Tamsoult refuge (2,260 m).1 hour and 30 minutes, walking.

Waterfalls, high altitudes & the Lepiney Refuge
After an early breakfast, walk up to the Lepiney Refuge (3,000 m) – around 4 hours walking. This day offers amazing panoramic views of the Haouz plain and Marrakech. There will also be time for training. -
Mount Haj, Tizi n’Tizikert Pass & Departure
From the Lepiney Refuge, walk back to Aroumd village via Tizi n’Tzikert Pass and a mountain summit haj (3,600 m). This is a long day, around 6–7 hours walking. Overnight in Aroumd village. -
Farewell to Morocco
After breakfast, walk to the Tidli Plateau with more training. After lunch, transfer back to Marrakech around 4:00–5:00 pm.
